Fall Update 2016

Here’s an update on what Youth Trumpet & Taps Corps volunteers have been doing.

This summer, volunteers served funerals in Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, and Oklahoma.

In June, volunteers in Illinois, Minnesota, and Oklahoma served at Flag Day ceremonies.

In August, volunteers were invited to perform at the USS New Jersey’s 9-11 Memorial Service, at the Remembering our Heroes traveling exhibit, and at the World War II 6th Marine Division Reunion.

In September, we held a training at Sapulpa High School in Oklahoma. This training was supported by the Sapulpa High School Band Department, the Sapulpa High School Marine Corps JROTC, the Patriot Guard Riders of North East Oklahoma, and a special in-kind donation from Sonic—America’s Drive-In.

Our biggest news comes from the state of Illinois which is now the 5th state to have a law that grants excused school absences to high school trumpet players who play Taps at veteran’s funerals. This is thanks to the hard work of Jack Bumann who was our first volunteer in Illinois. Jack worked with his State Representative to draft the bill and it was signed into law by Governor Bruce Rauner at the Illinois State Fair and will take effect on January 1st.

We now have 45 volunteers taking our online training, which brings our ranks to 120 volunteers in 30 states across the country.

So, what’s next? Volunteers are rehearsing for upcoming Veterans’ Day ceremonies and Wreaths Across America events in 8 states.
